Social media is already impacting your business

You may be unsure of the benefits of your business participating in social media. There are lots of things to think about,
What will be your objectives?
What sites will you maintain a presence on?
Who will be responsible for this activity?
How will you mitigate the risks of participation?
There is only one problem with being so cautious. Your business or at least the core issues that your business work with are already part of social media. The only real question is do you want to know about and be part of those discussions or are you happy to let them roll along without you?
The first thing you can do is to listen,
Is anyone saying nice/horrible things about your company?
Is someone unhappy with one of your competitors and if so why?
What are customers talking about as the big issues in your sector?
Are people wondering if a company like yours might offer x or y feature/service?
This is the sort of information that was often wished for in the past.
I remember being part of discussions wondering how we could get this kind of data on existing customers. The idea that we could get this data from people who were not yet customers was fantasy.
This data is there waiting for you. These conversations are happening and you can listen in. If you want to you can engage in these discussions but to pretend that they do not exist is to deny your business of crucial intelligence.
