The Ministry of External Affairs will soon bring social networking tools to you through a portal which will facilitate entry into platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Earlier the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry had set up a business network site with live help features to facilitate investment into India by overseas Indians.

Online business networking forum

Called the Overseas Indian Facilitation Centre  this online business networking forum connects potential investors and entrepreneurs to a cross-section of innovative businesses, products and services in India. The Live Help at OIFC is a facilitation desk that is a unique CRM tool for the overseas investor audience. As a first level contact, the investor queries through the desk are systematically answered in consultation with OIFC's network of knowledge partners to guide the investment process till the final stages.

The professional consultants add value to an investor’s decision making by offering customised solutions and advice on the range of suitable investment products available through OIFC’s  Strategic Partners.

OIFC has for some time been using tools like Facebook, Twitter and other networking sites frequented by overseas Indians to connect with them and involve them in the investment process.

Foreign Ministry effort a ‘work-in-progress’

The Foreign Ministry effort is still a "work in progress" and they are experimenting with a few posts on Twitter. It is planned to make the portal "interactive" through links to social networking sites.

Though the use of Facebook and Twitter for public diplomacy is new in India, it is used more extensively in the developed countries, with the US and Britain even having created a code on the usage of this tool. In the US, not just institutions, even ambassadors and diplomats are on Twitter.

In other Western countries, apart from  Facebook and Twitter other network sites such as YouTube for videos and Flickr for photographs, are also used.
