The ‘Jai Ho’ slogan has captured the hearts of millions across the world and has catapulted India into the limelight in 2009. It does send a tingle across my nerve, a sense of excitement to be part of the Indian populace at this point of time, to be at the right place at the right time. It is indeed, that point of time when India is fast becoming one of the most happening and sought after places to be in. Even economic experts agree, a recent Servcorp International Business Confidence Survey report stated that India was the third best place to be in at such recessionary times. Indians are almost there, saving up for rainy days at an incredible rate of 35 per cent – the second largest savings rate in the world.
We have learnt to give
We have Nandan Nilekani and A R Rahman hogging major public attention when they were declared part of the ‘Time 100 list of the World's Most Influential People’ in 2009. We have four Indians, including Sunil Mittal, Chairman and Managing Director of the Bharti Group, NRI businessman Anil Agarwal, Shiv Nadar, HCL Technologies, Chairman and NGO activist, Rohini Nilekani featuring in the Forbes list of ‘48 Heroes of Philanthropy' recently. We have umpteen billionaires and about 1.23 lakh millionaires whose number is steadily rising at a rate of 20 per cent annually. And, we have people philanthropically involved like the NRIs who are giving back to the country in good measure.
We have super luxury cars from Mercedes, Rolls Royce, and fashion accessories from global majors vying for a pie in the Indian market. The Indian edition of the rivetting Forbes magazine too is now available. Things are moving ahead with Indians keeping pace with the developed world - metro trains, solar cities, solar phones, my favourite Hindu Business Line on Twitter, so many famous Indians such as Rahul Gandhi and CEOs tweeting merrily, CommonWealth Games, you name the stuff and lo and behold, it’s all here in India!
We have given exciting things in the past for the world to remember—zero, yoga healing minds and bodies, Kashmiri Zaffran (saffron), Kanjeevaram silks, Basmati rice, Tirupati ladoos, the genius of Satyajit Ray—and now, Rahman and Dr Manmohan Singh, an acknowledged world leader and economic wizard, whom President Obama claims to have great respect for. We have learnt to give more than what we have got.
Getting more Vocal, more Social
Indians ought to benefit and take advantage of these good times—which can get even better—to learn to be assertive and mould the thought process of the world at large. They need to say both yes and no as and when required, get beneath the minds of people, become more social, open up new horizons through more interactive channels of communication, say, something like social media. It’s time we realised that we can make a difference!
